Into Your Hand
As the new king and queen of pop culture, Kelse and Swift are continuously spotted holding hands, and the world can not stop talking about the way he holds the hand of the Grammy-winning singer. He’s even noted for perfecting the hand-hold transfer while opening her car door or leading her safely through a crowd of Swifties. I am reminded how there is something inside of us that wants this, to be held and led in a strong, safe, reassuring way, and when we see someone experiencing this, we all take note.
Although earthly affection and care are amazing, experiencing this with my Heavenly Father, the holding of my hand in a spiritual sense, far surpasses this simple act of human love.
I’m sure it is universal to have moments like mine. There was something I had to do. A place I didn’t want to go. A site I didn’t feel ready to see. News I wasn’t wanting to hear. I knew He wanted me to go, so I would go because of that. What was personally moving, was that scripture after scripture began to flood over me about Him being by my side. How He would be with me. How He would guide me. How He would have His right hand there for me. I closed my eyes and allowed the image of His right hand grasping mine and walking with me into my circumstances to replace my fear, picturing Him going before me, even dragging me a bit, as I recluctantly but willingly followed.
Instead of fear, what I felt was comfort, capacity, a gentle guidance. I have come to learn and experience that He never asks me to do something for Him that He isn’t giving me His strength and grace to do. He’s not like that. Here’s what His word says about His hands.
Psalm 16:8 “I have set the Lord always before me; because He is at my right hand, I shall not be shaken.”
Isaiah 41:10 & 13 “Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand…For I am the LORD your God who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, Do not fear; I will help you.”
Psalm 63:8 “My soul clings to You; Your right hand upholds me.”
Psalm 139:10 “Even there Your hand shall lead me, and Your right hand shall hold me.”
Psalm 73:23 “Yet I still belong to You; You hold my right hand.”
Psalm 136:12 “With a mighty hand and outstretched arm; His love endures forever.”
Psalm 89:13 “Your arm is endowed with power; Your hand is strong, Your right hand exalted.”
Jesus, in His final moments, said a declaration of trust and comfort, “Father into Your hand I commend my spirit.”
So when I arrived at where I needed to be, to do the things He compelled me to do, I could walk with ease knowing He was holding my hand and walking with me, just as He promised to do. What I was experiencing wasn’t a surprise to Him. He knew this day was coming and so, as He always is, He was available to me. What seemed insurmountable in my imagination became doable in the present knowing He was right by my side with power and love.
I too can say, ” Into Your hand, I commend ____________,” and watch Him lovingly and faithfully guide and support me to do the things He asks me to do in the places He has asked me to go.
“What seemed insurmountable in my imagination became doable in the present knowing He was right by my side with power and love.”
